The tuna were there, in full force. I learned a few things today...First, trial casts just outside Green Harbor.. Give everyone a rundown of what's going to happen. We got to the fishing grounds and the blitz was on. It was pretty insane, actually. We had blitzes of fish 20 yards off of the boat and it was chaos. Good chaos, but we missed some great chances because weren't ready. Lines and gear was ready, but we weren't.

Which rod will everyone use? Is the handle on the proper side? Are you comfortable with a long leader? Do you know how to work the lure? Do you know how to cast a long distance? I should have done a "once over" before leaving the harbor. My bad.

But, on a plus side, after the chaos subsided, we got into a rythem....Three fish hooked up today and plenty of chances. That's a good day in any regards. The fact that we landed none of the fish is just tuna fishing. The first fish was fought by Joe perfectly, but it broke the leader 15 yards from the boat. I think it was a rollover/gill plate job, as most of the leader came back. The next hookups were doubles--Nick and Joe on the bow came tight.... Joe took one for the team and palmed his reel in a "make-it-or-break-it" move. Didn't have to do it; these weren't huge fish and we could have probably fought them from a still boat. Either way, cool move on his part. Nick had his fish stopped quickly thereafter, but it threw the hook. It happens with my tuna candy, though rarely. The drag on the Okuma VS80 on that run was super smooth. It was good to put the reel to the test. Now for a long battle/landing!!

The surface bite lasted several hours, which was incredible. So, fish 3, us zero. That's ok. It was very promising! I have some photos of Dom Petrarca's charter landing a fish--nice job on a 60" fish. By the way...has anyone else seen those 20 pound tunas jumping around? Awesome to see the little guys. Don't go bringing out the striper gear yet...they're in the middle of a school of really big, aggressive fish....I'll have video from today in my 2009 NEW VIDEOS section... Capt. Rich Antonino, 508-269-1882, off on Thursday, but looking to fill next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday....Call.

Black Rose Fishing Charters specializes in small, private fishing charters. Our rates are very affordable and it is much easier to put together a smaller charter. We are based in Green Harbor, but we fish all of Cape Cod, Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth Bay, and Buzzards Bay. We target all species of fish, depending on season. We fish for "groundfish", which means cod, haddock, pollack, wolf fish, cusk, hake, halibut, and redfish. We would fish for sharks every day if we could and we catch blue sharks, makos, threshers, and porbeagles. We love it. Because of the design of our boat, we can have 4 people casting at one time very easily. We love fishing for bluefin tuna (casting, jigging, and trolling), striped bass, and bluefish. We have a fast boat, full cabin, and comfortable ride. See you out there!
