I'm only going to say this once. Whoa. I said it 100 times today watching tuna bust around us. It was one of those days. For us, it was welcome relief. Great weather. Sunny. Calm. No wind. And tuna busting everywhere. It was out of sight.
It was a striper trip. Ok, plans can change. And they did. We heard of tuna busting nearby, so we headed around and set up shop. Seeing a school start busting, we motored over there. Before we could get there, a closer boat was there; the fish were still up. We idled down a good distance away as to not spook the fish and crept in. About 100 yards away, the other boat hooked up. He gave us the "holy crap we're on" face and I got our lines out of the water immediately. As he thought his fish may head our way, he let us know it and we backed away to about 300 yards.
So, run around some more. Some more striper fishing. Capt. Dom gave me a call; another friend gave me a call so we were off to tuna fishing again. There was a fish here, a fish there. Some fish pushing water. Nothing to sink your teeth into. Then, all by ourselves, all hell broke loose. I mean, insanity times 10! An acre of fish busting 300 yards away. We nosed over there so as not to spook the fish and had 4 people casting into the school. Two Dad and two sons. It was perfect. Bruce hooked up on my TunaCandy. After a 5 minute battle, the fish sounded, came back to the boat, and threw the hook. It's rare that we lose fish on those hooks, but I guess it could happen. Within minutes, the fish rose again and we were in them thick. Bruce got slammed again! Short strike on the same lure. Next cast, SLAM! Short strike. Welcome to my addiction. All I see is tuna when I close my eyes. Now you know why. I had Dom and friends on the radio and in my area waiting for the next blitz. The popped up next to us and Bruce hooked up on his first cast. It was incredible. His first tuna! He said "I don't give up". 40 minutes later, fighting the fish from my bow with everything he had, I gave him a breather. 10 seconds is all he needed. We had color for 10 minutes and the fish wouldn't budge. I gave him another breather and was able to circle the fish to a waiting harpoon in the cockpit. Brett slammed this fish like never before. I mean, 3' of the harpoon shaft went through the fish!!! Can you say "buttonhooked"? Done. Big fish. Tasty fish. Better than just striper fishing fish.
I'm booking up, so drop me a line and we'll get you out there very soon! Exhausted and exhilerated, Capt. Rich Antonino, Black Rose Fishing Charters, 508-269-1882
Black Rose Fishing Charters specializes in small, private fishing charters. Our rates are very affordable and it is much easier to put together a smaller charter. We are based in Green Harbor, but we fish all of Cape Cod, Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth Bay, and Buzzards Bay. We target all species of fish, depending on season. We fish for "groundfish", which means cod, haddock, pollack, wolf fish, cusk, hake, halibut, and redfish. We would fish for sharks every day if we could and we catch blue sharks, makos, threshers, and porbeagles. We love it. Because of the design of our boat, we can have 4 people casting at one time very easily. We love fishing for bluefin tuna (casting, jigging, and trolling), striped bass, and bluefish. We have a fast boat, full cabin, and comfortable ride. See you out there!
