Pollock

Pollock are some of the most prolific fish that we find.  There are times when we find them blitzing on the surface, especially in the early season, April and May..  Most of the time, however, we find them in deeper water, on wrecks and serious structure.  Catching two or three of these at a time is often the norm when we find the right school.  Sometimes, the schools are homogeneous…all the same size…As long as they’re 19″, we stay and fill the freezer!

Our biggest so far is 31#….anything over 10# is a nice fish and will give you a good battle.  They are good eating and they do freeze well.  DESPITE WHAT PEOPLE THINK!  I realized why they are opposed…it’s because on many boats, the fish go into a tote all day and the fish get filleted many hours later on the ride home.  Pollock doesn’t fare as well as cod or haddock under these circumstances, so people just thought “it doesn’t taste good.” WRONG.

I fillet these as they come over the rail; rinse them in salt water, then pack them in ice…  They freeze great and taste great.  And there are no bag limits on them!
