Tautog or Blackfish

Tautog, or blackfish as they are called in the Long Island area, are local to our waters and a great catch in the early spring and late fall. They are one of the first inshore fish to be caught in Buzzards Bay, with catches starting in April. In the fall, they are once again the target as they are one of the last fishes to leave as the water cools.

They fight hard, get big, but grow slowly. For that reason they are becoming overfished. They're also great eating! They congregate around rocks and wrecks and are one of the only fish to commonly eat those green crabs. Green crabs are a great bait for them.

Tautog look like huge perch (cunner/choggies)!
