Spiny Dogfish

Does anyone want to catch tons of sharks? Of course you do. But let me rephrase...does anyone want all of the spiny dogfish that you can carry home? If yes, come along and be tickled pink. These fish have invaded our waters over the past 5 years or so and have become a plague. I mean, in the fall you can see them finning on the surface eating eggs that are floating on the seaweed. Fishing with bait is difficult sometimes as there are so many dogfish that intercept your bait before the cod and haddock can get there. Even fishing off of Provincetown, in 20' of water there are tons of dogfish. And some fish-counter said that they were endangered! Moron. Sorry to be so harsh, but if anyone thinks that they are hurting, come along on any charter at any time of the year, now. It used to be that they would invade our waters for a while and then be gone. Wrong.

The kids like to see them, for a while, then even they get tired out from catching them. We can avoid them sometimes by moving around a bit and hitting deeper water, but that's a pain sometimes. The best bet is to switch to jigs, but then you will have 4 or 5 dogfish eating your cod on the way to the surface. It's crazy. I can ramble all day on this one
