I used to fish for a few of these fish for dinner, then fish for sea bass and fluke after my meal was assured (in 5 minutes!) That's how good
the action for scup can be. For their size, they fight like bulls. On light tackle, you have to be quick to avoid getting your bait stolen. It's a great
fish for kids because of the non-stop action and great taste. In the spring, we get a great run of large fish in mid-May to mid-June. Plus, in May and June the possession limit on our boat is 60 fish per person!!! Including the captain and mate--that means 4
customers can keep 360 fish!!! Come fishing with us and try!! Then the small fish move in for the
summer, only to be replaced by slabs in the early fall.
I've never caught a piranha, but I figure that they must bite the bait the same way. BangBangBangBang gone if you don't hook it.
They are even good-looking, as their silver bodies and purple tops are quite dramatic.
In recent years, they've been found to be amazing striped bass bait! Who knew?
Our Scup(porgy) trips are perfect late spring/early summer trips. The action
peaks in June (in May, go cod fishing in shallow water on Stellwagen Bank before the commercial netters move in).
