Porbeagle Shark

Porbeagle sharks looks much like a mako, but it isn't known for it's jumping or high speed runs. It is known as a glutten for mackerel, and you can often find them when the mackerel are thick. They are even known to run in "packs" of several individuals. More than other sharks, they are a cold-water species and also a deep-water shark. They will often find a boat fishing for cod and pick the cod off either on their way back to the bottom or on their way to the boat. When that happens, get ready!!

They don't get as large as makos, but they have been caught over 400 pounds in Massachusetts before. Like the mako, they do make great eating! Around Cape Cod, the porbeagle shark is a top predator. In the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament, often times it is the porbeagle, not the mako, that puts money on the table. Shark Fishing trips on the Black Rose...you never know what you're going to catch!

Porbeagle Sharks are sometimes confused with mako sharks!
