I'm not saying I expect to target these fish, but they are in our waters. And there are more and more every year. With the expanding seal population, expect to see them more and more.We couldn't keep them if we caught one, as they are a protected species now. In 2009, 5 Great Whites were tagged off of Chatham. We'll get traveling data on these fish when the tags pop off in May, 2010. I'll be curious to see where they've been. In 2008, we saw one large great white shark off of Race Point (lots of seals) and in 2009, we had a monster great white come up to our chum bucket while we were shark fishing off of Wildcat Knoll. At that time, we had 5 blue sharks next to the boat which disappeared quickly and the mako shark we were fighting almost spooled us as it took off away from the great white!
On occasion each summer people encounter them offshore and even inshore. Many times, if there is a dead whale in the area, there will be a great white feeding on it.
